facebook, new Centre website, more mutterings!

Hi all,

the “new” Centre website can be found at:  https://wessexcentreacu.wixsite.com/wessexcentreacu

many of you are aware I don’t do Facebook. I’ve now found out why I don’t, this apocryphal tale is, I understand, appearing in many places on the internet, I came across it in a Saab related website.

Before I do that though, here’s a few little sporting snippets. SSDT News, Adam Norris has an Entry, so does Tom Culliford, a lot of foreign entries too. We chose not to go & observe Kingswood’s Avery Cup Centre Championship Trial yesterday week, we’d had the East wind blowing  across our garden the day before & decided then that it wouldn’t be smart to go out on Sunday & stand around on cold ground  in a a sub zero temperature (taking the wind chill into account). I’m delighted that all Sections had Observers, hats off to them all. Kurt has carried on winning & could well manage to defend both his Centre Trials Championships when the final Points Tables are published.

The weather is affecting events as you know, Wilts Border cancelled their Trial last Sunday as was the opening Round of the Wessex Plant Hire British Sidecar Trials Championship (down on Dartmoor?). The BSSA Reg Lewis Trial on Sunday 11th March is already cancelled

And now “A seniors perspective of Facebook

For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.
Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom.
I give them pictures of my family, of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.
I also listen to their conversations, give them the ‘thumbs up’ and tell them I like them.
And it works just like Facebook!   I already have four people following me:

Two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.”

Well it made us both laugh, & I’m happy not to leave footprints in the worlds server farms for others to track down. I wonder how many of us have given away or told the world where our two wheeled pride & joy is stored without thinking? I had this conversation about thieves, theft& facebook with someone who wanted to renew their Competition Licence just this morning.

Todays (07/01/18) Wilts Border Kington Cup Trial Results

Good evening all,

Theresa has sent over todays Results which are here Wilts Border Kington Cup Trial Results 070118 for you.

We had thought of popping over to observe but it seemed a very strong cold wind so we decided against it. A quick count made 35? of you, and by the look of it it was not too hard but able to take marks from everyone with the Class winners Richard Fry losing 1 on the Main route & Michael Maslin dropping twice as many (2!) on the alternative route. I’d noticed Paul Hearn rode the Kingswood trial a week or two ago, but he found the 4 laps of eight sections tough by the look of it. Pleased to see some other visitors to the Centre including Lee Wiggins, Bret Harbud, Reynard Norris, and a new name to me, Youth B rider Harry Rayner-Lovejoy and also Steve Usher having a rare outing.

Centre Trials Championship: Regs & Entry Form for Wilts Border’s Championship Autumn Trophy Trial 5th November

Hi all,

Please find the Regs & entry Form for the Wilts Border Centre Trials Championship Autumn Trophy Trial on 5th November at Breakheart Quarry. Theresa tells me that you can also enter via the ACU website using the online entry system.

Find the Regs here: WBorder Autumn Trophy Centre Champ Regs 051117 & the Entry Form here: WBorder Autumn Trophy Centre Champ Entyr Form 051117

See you there?

Frank

Hi all,

We’ve just got back from a fortnight away driving to a Saab rally in Luxembourg & there’s a fair few things to update you all on.

Firstly, a reminder that the Wells Centre Championship Presidents Trophy Time Trial is on this Sunday at Rookham. The Regs are here:- Wells Presidents Champ TT Regs 01117 & the Entry Form is here:- Wells Presidents Champ TTrial Entry 011017

The Centre Trials Championship Calendar has become a bit confused this year with Rounds being cancelled, & replacement Rounds being approved, so following the last Board Meeting, the remaining rounds are

08/10/17    WWMC           Errington Cup
05/11/17    W Border       Autumn Trophy
26/11/17    NSMSC           Presidents Trophy
10/12/17    Bath & WoE   Knut Trophy
Further from the Board Meeting, the Wilts Border Endeavour Trial scheduled for this Saturday is Cancelled.
Mike Fear has given notice that he’s done his last Centre Fixture Card, but will ‘point the way’ & advise as required to his successor – You could Volunteer to do this couldn’t you? Mike has quietly & conscientiously done this for so many years that it was easy to take the Fixture Card for granted. All your thanks to Mike ( & to Chris who I am sure got involved as well
Good News (from my point of view) is that Gareth Talbot, who need no introduction from me, has agreed to take over the Centre web-site with effect from the Centre’s AGM. I gather he is likely to introduce a Centre ‘Facebook’ presence as well, an obvious extension to the service the Centre gives Riders, which I expect will extend the reach & immediacy of  Wessex Centre ACU information – oops the branding now is “Wessex ACU” isn’t it

Todays Wilts Border Salutation Novice Trial Results

Good evening all,

We went out to the Wilts Border Trial at the Piggeries today, a super little event, only 21 Riders but it seemed as if everyone enjoyed themselves. Better still the early morning rain had stopped & although some of the sections were ‘modded’ before the start, the bank dried in the wind, & the stream hadn’t yet reacted to the rainfall so there were two sections in the stream & 8 up and down the bank. It stayed dry until everyone had finished & then came some rain & hail. A good mix of riders too, 5 or 6 youth riders including Michael Maslin’s lads – David & Edwin & a couple of veter…. ,sorry lets call them experienced, riders – Billy Andrews & Andy Perry. So all ages were there. Some youth riders who we’ve not seen before – Zac & Harvey Ward down from near Ciren. [If you need any wrought iron work done have a look at their Dad’s website –  donkeywellforge ]. Results had been collated & mailed out nice & early – I noticed them in my in-box at ten to six.

The results are here, WBorder Salutation Novice RTCentre Results 050317  Excluding Gareth T, (its a Novice Trial remember) best on the day with 6 marks lost was evergreen Nigel Tomkins and R/up was Dean Hassall on 14m/l. i suspect it was Deans first ride since his nasty work accident & I’m not sure how much clutch control he had. Molly Hassall was out with Mum & Dad another potential observer or rider in a few years time? Section 6 observed by Neil Blackmore proved trickiest with Nigel having a dab each lap (memo to self, lovely to watch a dab taken to ensure you get through rather than struggling to go clean & then footing or worse failing) Dean on the other hand had three’s each lap – which accounts for the 8 mark differential.

Keep your feet up: Frank

Centre AGM – Changing of the Guard! Date changes. Regs available for ..

Hello all,

The dust has settled on the AGM, & the old guard will be changing. A brief Report follows.

Roll call of Clubs: All affiliated Clubs were represented except BGRC, Frome, Mendip Vale & Wells.    Apologies were tendered & accepted for Alan Brown & Vic Osman of BGRC.  {Editors comment: Mendip haven’t been represented at the AGM at any of the last six, Frome have only been represented for  three of the last six & Wells haven’t been represented at four of the last six. That suggests the Centre is not in “good health”}

The retiring President, Martin Bracey presented the Harry Croft Trophy to Mike Fear, The Chairman, Keith Wooster remarked that new people were needed on the Board  The Hon Secretary echoed the Chaimans remarks. {that’s the third consecutive year he or the Secretary have said that – Ed.} The Hon Treasurer said we had an excess of income over expenditure only because there were no Inter Centre Event Teams to be supported, but the income showed there were fewer riders & fewer events in the Centre.

The Treasurer presented his Financial Report for the year which was discussed & formally accepted. The Gazette Editor presented his Report reviewing his tenure & announced he was standing down at the next AGM Read that Report here: Gazette Editors Report for 2016 070217

All Officials were elected unopposed, & were exactly the same people as last year, except that your new President will be Denys Plaster of NSMSC, outgoing President Martin Bracey becomes an ex officio Vice President, & Bob Burt replaces Denys as our 4th VP.

The Board Meeting followed & the Officers appointed are the same as  last year as well. Mike Fear announced this would stand down as Permit Secretary at the next AGM

So that’s two important positions you, out there in the Centre, have got to take on to keep your sport running {everyone in the room was over 50 years old – as usual – Ed.}

Please note the following date changes/corrections to your Fixture Card: West Wilts James Cup Centre Trials Champ from 19th March to 26th March, Kingswood Abbotside Enduro from 30th July to 23rd July, BSSA Glens Sinclair T/Trial is on 14th not 13th May.

Regs are available for:

Wilts Border Centre Restricted Trial on 5th March here: WBorder Salutation Novice Regs 050317 & WBorder Salutation Novice Entry form 050317

West Wilts Centre Championship Trial on 26th March here: West Wilts JamesCupChampTrial regs & EntryForm26:03:17

Out of Centre: How about a weekend away? there are 22 classes & choice of two courses either with or without roadwork in the Isle of Wight MCC 50th Anniversary Two Day Trial on 22nd & 23rd April. Info & Regs are available here: IoW MCC 50thAnni 2 day info 2017 & IoW 50th Anni TwoDay Regs&EntryForms 22&230417

It’s time to get involved Guys:  Frank

Wilts Border: Border Cup Results 8th January, North Somerset Centre Champs Terry Bunn Time Trial Regs & Entry Form for 5th February, Franks Mutterings …

Hello again,

we’ve a few things for you to take note of:

First the Results for the Kington Cup Wilts Border Trial last Sunday, w-border-kington-cup-results-080117-1  – good to see an excellent entry!

And next the Regs & Entry Form for the North Somerset Terry Bunn Trophy Centre Championship Time Trial on The 5th of February, nsmsc-ttrial-champs-terry-bunn-050217

Didn’t we have a battle for the 2016 Centre Trials Champion where it ended up all change after the last Round. Just how a Championship should be, in doubt until the final Round. I know there weren’t as many riders contesting the Expert Class as we would like but I’d like to thank all those guys who supported us & who were in  with a shout at the Knut Trophy. At the end of the Knut, the Result of the Trial & the Championship had to come down to the last tie breaker!

I did see a comment somewhere about a ‘works’ rider being able to score points ( I presume because whoever made the comment thought it had affected the Championship positions) but it made no difference to the final Result. The “works” rider in question has to be Toby Martyn & I think we should all be pleased that Toby chose to enter one of our Events. It’s a bit like saying that the Rules should be ‘bent’ i.e. the Rules should be changed to exclude Works Riders from the Championship, think about that, then someone would want to exclude riders not Resident in the Centre, then …  Well the Centre wants to encourage our own Riders to improve, & how do we encourage that, not by running a “closed” Championship I’m sure, the one restriction placed on Entrants is that they are Members of a Club Affiliated to the Wessex Centre.

If I recall correctly, Toby was announced as a Vertigo contracted rider this year (?) & I for one wish him all success in future Events, hope he stays injury free & fulfils his undoubted potential. I’m sure that all of you out there do as well & just wish a little bit of Toby’s skill rub off on us or if we don’t compete these days that we can at least admire them at home & abroad.

Frank

ps: My 2017 ACU Handbook came with todays Post

— And A Happy New Year to ALL — BSSA Phil Sparkes Trial Results, Wilts Border Kington Cup Trial Regs & Entry Form, —

We hope you’ve all recovered from any overindulgences at the Christmas & New Year celebrations?  and we wish you all a successful 2017.

We’ve got last years BSSA Phil Sparkes Trial Results here, firstly the Solos bssa-phil-sparkes-solo-results-27121616 & also the Sidecar Results here bssa-phil-sparkes-trial-results-scars-271216 (looks as if Josh & Luke Golding had troubles (?) as they dropped more marks than any of the other crews. An excellent Solo entry of 58, with some names that I don’t recognise & some names that I do who ride ‘occasionally’

We’ve the Regs & Entry Forms for the Wilts Border Kington Cup w-border-kington-cup-regs-080117 & wborder-kington-cup-entry-form-080117 which is on Sunday – so get those Enries in now!

Had a little stroll around Browns Folly during the break, & noticed a guy on a Mountain Bike with a head cam riding around. Then we noticed what seemed to be a marked path or trail with a drop off into a gully & we were just thinking ‘trials section’ when he turned up & started sizing it up as well. He thought better of it as there was a slippy hairpin about 3 lengths before it & some nasty pointy rocks a couple of lengths after landing. If it were ridden in the opposite direction it looked like an excellent potential Expert section.

West Wilts Motor Club would like record it’s appreciation to all of you who attended Ken Lywoods’ funeral yesterday, especially ACU Vice President, Colin Moram.

See you soon: Frank

Royston Claude, NSMSCs’ Presidents Trial, NSMSC’s Ivan Manning T/Trial Results, NSMSC’s Richard Sage T/trial Regs, Bath & WoE Knut Championship Trial Regs, Wells Miller Cup Champ Trial Regs, Frank Mutters

Hello all,

Several of us were at Royston Claude {Roy} Mantells’ cremation at Westerleigh yesterday afternoon. A simple Humanist celebration of Roys’ 91 years life & times. Roy had the last word, having written his own epitaph contained in one of his rhyming ‘poems’. Perhaps you will understand that it was a celebration when I tell you that the last music played was ‘Right said Fred’ We hope it gave comfort to Roys’ widow, Velma, & all his Family.

Turning now to various past & future Events noted in order of submission. Goodness me, we’ve some Regs for a 2017 Event already, I s’pose that means it’ll be Christmas soon?

The Regs & Entry Forms for the first Centre Championship Trial of the 2017 season, the Wells & District “Miller Cup Trial” on 22nd January are here: wells-miller-cup-regs-220117 and here: wells-miller-cup-champ-trial-entry-form-220117

NSMSC’s Ivan Manning Championship Time Trial is reported on by Jerry Walters, who says:

“Morning Frank,

Results of North Somerset Club’s Ivan Manning Trophy Time Trial, held at Malthouse Farm, Chelwood on Sunday 20th November, are attached for the website.

This event was the final round of the 2016 Wessex Centre Time Trial Championship, and as seems to be the norm at this venue, the weather tried it’s hardest to disrupt proceedings. Fortunately storm Angus moved away just before the start, but the course still had to be drastically eased and shortened.

As usual the battle in the Trials class was between Jason Hamblin and Andy Frost, and this time it was Jason who got the upper hand. He lost just 21 marks on observation plus 2 on time to take the class win and overall premier from Andy, who lost 28 on observation plus 3 on time. Kye Steel made one of his rare appearances to take third place losing a total of 53 marks.

In a smaller than usual Scrambles class field, the battle for the win was between Dad and his lad. In the end age and experience proved decisive and Gary Newman narrowly took the win on 87 marks, from his son Nathan Newman who lost 90 marks. Although Tom Smith set standard time, he lost 98 marks in the observed sections which dropped him down the third spot.

Cheers Jerry”

The full Results are here: nsmsc-ivan-manning-tt-results-201116

Regs for the NSMSC’s Richard Sage Electrical RTC T/trial on 11th December are here: nsmsc-richard-sage-ttrial-regsandentry-form-111216

Don’t forget the NSMSC Presidents Trophy penultimate Centre Championship Trial is on Sunday – See you there competing or Observing?

The Regs & Entry Forms for the last Centre Championship Trial of the 2016 Season, the Bath & West of England Knut Trophy Trial are here: bath-woe-knut-trial-champ-regs-111216 and here bath-woe-knut-champ-trial-entry-111216

Frank mutters: The last Wilts Border Trial at the Piggeries had 36 Entries a vastly greater number than the previous Event at the Piggeries which had a miserly feeble Entry of just 7 of you. Letting you all into a little secret, the 36 of you have saved Events at the Piggeries, the Club were within a knats’ whisker of giving up on the Venue. You can’t afford to dishearten the Club Officials by not supporting them if you want to keep on having something to do on Sundays!

The Centre Expert Championship is by no means decided as Ollie Humphries, Lee Hassall & Ben Skinner are all still able to be the winner, current Champ Kurt Brain will vacate the Title as he can gain a max of 42 points if he enters & wins on Sunday & again at the Knut, Ollie is leading on 59 but has to finish 2nd or better in the Presidents & the Knut to improve his current points total of 59 [i.e. he could get to a max of 69], Lee on 42 & Ben on 38 can add to their points total at both Events as they’ve both only ridden three Rounds. Ben’s in good Form having won the Hurran last weekend where Lee & Ollie rode as well, so I reckon it’ll be decided at the Knut. If any ‘spoilers’ enter – Tom Culliford ? Toby Martyn? Tom Hooper? it’ll complicate things even more! Three Championship classes are decided already as Richard Elliott, Dai Clothier & Henry Pym will be O40, O50 & Clubman Expert Champions as they can’t be overtaken in these last two Rounds, so congrats to all three.

Its been a busy two or three weeks for us as our Clive is under the weather, i think everything that contributors have sent in has now been posted, but let me know if I’ve missed anything.

Now to start marking the Trials Officials Licencing Seminar Questionnaires!

Frank

ps I hear Scott Trial Charity Team rider Barry Roads had his bike impounded – whoops
