Several news items for you! Welcome to Grace & Freya. Greetings from Chris & Janet. Tyson out of ISDE

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Hi all,

been busy decorating & theres’s still quite a bit of work to do, so if you have felt neglected you know why.

First off, the Frome ‘Ron Jefferies’ Trial has had to be moved forward a week to the 4th September so please take that on board & get your Entry in to Mary Crease asap. Regs will be up by Monday if not before.

The reason the Ron Jefferies has been moved is that it’s original date has been usurped by the Inter Centre Team Trial which is at Lllanfyllin in Mid Wales Centre on 10th youth/sidecar & 11th Adult solo of September, as Tom ,our Team Manager , & Mary can’t be in two places at once they have fortunately been able to move the Frome date forward. Our team is Colin Crease, Craig Talbot, Lee Hassall & two new team members, Fred Adams & Kurt Brain, lets hope the Cof C ‘s take on board the T&E C’ttee exhortation to make sections suitable for ‘ordinary’ Centre riders. There will also be a 1 minute time allowance for actually riding the section.

Additionally we have entered a youth team & a sidecar team & I’ll give you names as soon as I have them.

What else needs to be posted up?  The ‘Greybeards’ this year is being run off road in Kent at Horsmonden, with an open permit on 4th September so if you are over 40 you are eligible!

And a third event on 4th September is the North Somerset RT Keedwell restricted to Club Timed Trial Regs up by Monday if not before! I’ve got their Blackman Trophy Timed Trial Results to post as well!

Who are Grace & Freya? – they are Andy Noad & Lucy’s identical twins who are now about 10days old. Congratulations to Lucy & Andy

It’s ISDE time & I see West Wilts member Jenny Hodgkins is there for the fortieth time, as the ACU website says “Then to watch Jenny with her clip board is an education in itself with all their time allowances’ on keeping a watchful eye of anything up to 6 to 8 riders, when they should leave and go and check in for the day she is so good at doing this job, but she has had some good training this will be her 40th ISDE looking after various teams a sterling effort Jenny.” I don’t know if Tyson Maytom-Jones  is still in or not, he was reported as being in on time on the first day, but I can’t find him in the start list for day 5 [today ] Afternote  - Tyson went out on TC38 on day 2 I’ve found on the FIM website

We’ve another brief missive form our Francophiles Chris & Janet. Chris reports —- p”Hi Frank just got back to Guys house after 3 weeks on the road (trials professionals now…except we have to pay!)  I think everybody knows of if not about the 4 days of Cruise (or Sardent) I found it a bit tough on the S3 route it’s pretty daunting to be faced with big (and when I say big I mean big) rocks 80 odd different sections over 4 days ..you have to walk every one! and they’re not mickey mouse sections. We then went on up to the Haut Vosges taking the touristic route via the Jura and Alsace regions. We went to a trials “school” at La Bresse where you can camp and ride on typical European standard sections (it’s all a bit different to Wessex Centre.) 15 euros a night to camp with electric water sauna showers etc… 8 euros a day to ride with pressure washer at end of day;.. the guy who runs it is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about trials.. thoroughly reccomended for a weeks trialling holiday and about 5 hours from Calais. We then went to the 3 days of Haut Vosges trial at Vagney just 25 k down the road. This was for me the best of the three classic trials we have so far done this year 72 sections , 100 k /day of interzone with practically no sight of tarmac (when you do get to ride a bit of road it’s a blessed relief!), the sections have generally 3 different routes with mix and match available also… there is something for everybody. Again they like to use rocks in abundance fortunatly grippy granite ones here. Janet was on podium for 3rd time in 3 trials. I came 32 out of 70 odd in my S3 class rode with Charles Coutard was very interesting all round with 4 course meals at every lunch stop ..excellent regional food with of course wine on the table. Back now to to our regime of practicing every other day. thats all for now Hi to all trials friends.”

That’s it for now, it’s past my bedtime! Frank

Chattering is delighted to announce a new generation of Shuttleworths!

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Yes, Ben Shuttleworth is a Dad! Abbie , of course had the difficult bit to do & apart from being a 10 days or so late all went well & young Haydn weighed in about 71/2lbs at 23:30 on Friday night at RUH in Bath. As is the way of things these days little Haydn was home at 2:30am this morning & all are well. We look forward to seeing Abbie & Haydn at events very soon.

Continuing with the future, we’ve just seen the latest picture of our own grandson, William, who now sports two top teeth & a cherubic smile!

Watch this space for further ‘happy events’ announcements later on in the year. We hear there are three more Mums to be!  – Frank

Wilts Border Trial at the Piggeries today, don’t forget the Wyndham Haines Centre Championship Trial next Sunday [13th March]

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

After the Wilts Border Trial today, Dave Best asked me what was on next week. Since I have no memory it took me a while to work out it was Fromes’ Wyndham Haines Centre Championship Trial. Then I realized why I didn’t know, I hadn’t posted any Regs!

When we got back I checked with Tom & Mary that it was on, they had been out Marking Out for next weekend, so don’t forget. When Mary gets the Regs to me I’ll get them up! Regs are now posted!

Good little Trial at the Piggeries, nothing difficult, although the climb in Section 7  polished up & started to take marks in the last couple of laps. Thanks to all Observers, it was a bit too cold for comfort, even though we’d finished by one o’clockish.

After the Trial I gathered from one ‘schoolboy’ Dad that they hadn’t had a good day for a particular reason. So I checked the other side of the story. One lad didn’t want to ride competitively, so didn’t enter, the Club  advised him of the Insurance implications of riding around the venue  should he cause an accident & that he could practice after the Trial. As Centre Steward, I completely support the Club’s action, that is why we have Rules for Competitions – to protect both Organisers & Riders. As Dad didn’t advise me of  this explanation by the Club I couldn’t talk all this through with him, but if he reads this & contacts me I am very willing to explain this to him. We all know schoolboys are the future of our sport.

Watch this space for Results & Regs: Frank

Following on from the Knut Trophy Trial – the Result we’ve been waiting for.

We’re delighted to send Colin & Row[ena] Crease all our congratulations on the birth of their son,  Jamie Thomas, at Paulton hospital on Thursday last. All are doing well we’re pleased to say.

Licencing, National Motorcycle Museum, National Council, Results of today’s Frome Trial

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Licencing for Clerks of Course & Stewards boring boring yes I know but its mid November & some of you will have Licences that expire on 31/12/10. So this is to remind you that you’ll need to attend a seminar to have your Licence renewed. In the centre we have about 20 Trials & Enduro, 5 Grass Track & 1 M-X Officials who need to be Licenced again for three years in January.

I can help out for T&E and am planning to run a seminar with one back up date during January at Warmley Community Centre. I know having been to Rugby yesterday for a National Council Meeting that the T&E Seminar will be changing as there will be different emphases on various aspects of the ‘syllabus’ from previous Seminars for next years Licences so please watch this space. Track Racing Seminars are best tackled by contacting Tracey Cossar at Rugby there may be Regional Serminars planned but I’m not aware of dates. Your Club Secretary should be up to speed with things as well.

I was up in Birmingham last weekend & after I’d finished I dived into the National Motor Cycle Museum for a bit. I’ve been ther a few times but there are so many bikes you can’t take it all in during one trip. Did you know for instance that the Co-op used to sell its own range of bikes? I didn’t. Did you know there was an engineer down in Southampton who designed & built his own 125cc 4stroke & rode it in the TT [best result 8th] It’s worth a trip! I’ve got a few photos that I might get a photoquiz out of when I find time.

Had a good day out at Elmington Manor today 21/11/12 for the Frome Centre Championship Trial. Elmington Manor Farm, is of course where National Sidecar Expert Champions Jon Tuck & Matt Sparkes practice. The practice so well that this year is [I think] Jon & Matt’s 4th consecutive year as Champions, & they’ve gone into retirement. The final flourish was the final Championship Round [that they didn't even need to go to as they had already wrapped up the Championship] which they won – oop North by pipping Robin & Sam Luscombe for the win.

Congratulations again  Jon & Matt  from all of us in the Centre

Thanks to all the Observers & Officials that turned out for you, I think there were only 2 Sections? that didn’t have an Observer for at least part of the Trial. And thanks to all you riders for supporting the Wessex Centre Championships when you could have gone to the Hurran in the Western Centre after it was changed to a date that clashed with us. Ben Darch & Colin Crease seem to be making a habit of losing equal marks at the end of the Trial – they did it again today with both of them losing 32 although Colin beat Ben when the tie break TSR 23a – most cleans – was applied. Neither of them won the Expert class though, former Champion Gary Marshman only parted with 18 all day & 10 of those were in Section 2 which he couldn’t clean all day. That particular triumph went to Lee Hassall on lap 1 & Colin on lap 2. Mary has sent Results through & they are now posted on the Centre Championship Results 2009, 2010 Page

More to follow when I’ve checked out something following several comments I’ve had from you riders both before todays trial & from one of our o50 riders & Regional CofC’s after the Wilts Border Championship Round which he didn’t attend. Watch this Space! So I’ll finish for now by reminding you of the Southern Experts the week after next call Chris Mawer on 07710211913 if you fancy a ride & he’ll squeeze you in [even though the closing date is tomorrow]

See you soon at the Knut perhaps? Frank

Here’s what you are waiting for!

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Yes I know I’ve kept you waiting but we’ve had to destroy a wasps nest in the compost heap today!

So here we go, in a jiffy you’ll have the restricted to Club Bath & WoE ‘Peace Trophy’ Trial Regs for this Saturday – 6th November – Frome Dinner day by the way, & three sets of Centre Championship Trials Regs, the Wilts Border Autumn Trophy for this Sunday 7th November, The Frome Selwood Cup & Novice Trial on 21st November & the Bath & WoE Knut on 12th December posted up for you.

More stuff to follow: Frank

Heres more of that stuff: Jerry Walters has sent across the N Somerset Gordon Brown Chase Timed Trial Results from last Sunday, & while I’ve been busy doing all this Andrew Fear has winged in my direction the Results from todays Kingswood Trial & a set of Regs for their 4th Restricted to Club Series Trial – that’s one to shake off a few of those extra lbs after gorging yourselves at Christmas.

Keep it coming all of you & thanks – so much stuff to get up today that you are going to have to wait a bit to be see & be bored with my selected Scott Trial photos: Frank

More Mutter, & Provocation? from Ba

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Good evening all.

Wow that’s been quite hard work, discovered at Thursday’s Club Meeting that we hadn’t got a Permit for the West Wilts Motor Club’s Hare & Hounds Event at Farleigh Castle next month (17th October) Mike Fear our Centre Permit Secretary is away so I volunteered to find out what was happening. Well the short answer was nothing & it took me a just over a day to get it arranged. We all take it for granted that we apply to Mike & back it comes in plenty of time. Believe me, it isn’t quite that simple. Thanks on all our Club’s behalves to Mike for his dedication to the Sport.

It was suggested at Club that we just put up the Regs saying Permit applied for but that can cause difficulty say you had an unfortunate incident. Consider this you put up Regs without a Permit No. you have returned to you signed Entry Forms without  the No & your entries close 4 – 5 days before the Event. Well you need to get your entrant to sign his Entry Form again on the day after you’ve written in the Permit No. on 100+ forms.

Should have the Regs up for Farleigh tomorrow – I think Tom Gerken will mail likely entrants but don’t forget to keep checking the West Wilts website [www.wwmc.co.uk] for them – only 35 quid to enter. I’m hearing quite a few H&H Events are being cancelld due to lack of Entries – that’s why the Club reduced Entry Fee’s this year -  to try & help out.

If you look at Ba’s September View you’ll see he’s developing the theme of costs as well among his pithy comment. Don’t forget Centre Championship Trials kick off again this weekend down at Wanstrow with Frome’s Ron Jeffries Trial. See you there?

Does JD of TMX know something we don’t or is it just guesswork? He’s wondering whether new European Trials Champ Alexz Wigg might turn to speedway. As JD says making a living out of trials (& moto-X) is getting harder to imagine with the level of sporting sponsorship in general reducing. Alexz & his family will know plenty about track racing, so it could just happen.

More Trials Champ Regs. & a nice day at Farleigh

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Hello all.

First off, Regs are now available for the Frome & Dist. Club’s Ron Jeffries Trophy Trial which is now Centre Championship Round, [it replaces their Wyndham Haines Trial which was cancelled back in March] Venue is Weston Town Farm down at Wanstrow & its on 12th September. Hope to see you there.

It was a good day at Farleigh, thought I ought to go and see how it’s done “these days”!  I didn’t say in my last “mutter” how dry the track was 7 days ago, I’d had a good look at the straight that takes you to the climbs & drops in the orchard. It was loose dry earth, not even any grass. But the sun shines on the righteous & ACU Events were blessed with heavy rain all day Tuesday , Friday afternoon & again for a lot of Saturday. Come race day the track was in prime condition that straight was nicely firmed up not at all slippy, just grippy. I’d guess at a ca 5k crowd. The spectator mix seemed to be across all age groups & I heard “ordinary punters” saying it wasn’t technical enough ie not enough bumps & jumps – but then in the next breath the comment that Silverstone is a dreadful viewing circuit. I’m not sure I agree about the technical bit, I saw top riders – Josh Coppins, Evgeny Bobreshev - getting the uphill jumps in the orchard all wrong! And don’t you think controlled powersliding round a sweeping bend is a spectacle? Come to think of it uncontrolled powersliding around sweeping bends is pretty interesting too. As expected I saw lots of people [sorry if I didn't immediately recognise you] I knew young & old. There were Dads remembering Dave  Thorpes epic red mist ride way back when [remember that one?] & Grandads remembering Jeff Smith, Don & Derek Rickman et al even further back. Maybe up in heaven they were talking about the pre war grass tacks? The smaller ones will be remembering Zach Osborne & Tom Church winning races back in 2010 when they get to be Dads with lads I’m sure.

I was concerned when I saw the red flag come out in the orchard after a couple of laps in Race 2 – serious problem needing ambulance on track I guessed. No – a safety issue – the Maxxis tube which spanned the track had collapsed  or moved off its tethers! It shouldn’t happen but it did! Never known them get moved/deflated in any Tour de France coverage so they must be pretty tried & tested technology?

I noticed the start gate was in two halves, not individual gates but fortunately there were no issues at the starts – if a section of an individual gate doesn’t drop its either a malfunction or an attempted “quick” start if half the entry doesn’t get away it has to be called a false start with no exclusions doesn’tg it?s As I often reckon the marshalling left a bit to be desired & I didn’t see a post whacking crew with sledge. Surprised to see a marshal dump his red & yellow flags & walk off to get a sledge, it took longer than a lap of the track & thenwhen he got back bang in posts without the other adjacent marshal covering him with a yellow flag. But that’s being picky.

Overall an excellent day. Oh & Bill Douglas is home & improving.
