This is what you want to see?? NSMSC’s Presidents Trophy Results are posted

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Right, we’ve just received the provisional results of yesterdays Trial. Its posted as a .pdf on the Centre Championship Trials & Timed Trials Page

The Experts were very close: Current Champion Colin Crease won on 9m/l, pushing Gary Marshman [12m/l] into R/Up place, Kurt Brain pushed very hard but dropped 13m to be 3rd, & Ben Lovelace fived the last Section to lose 17 in total for his 4th place. As last week we’ll leave Pete Dury to do his magic with all the Champ Tables for you & I’ll post them when we have them

Quite a day, quite a championship battle. My quick back of a fag packet calculation makes Gary our Expert champion this year , as now I believe his points total cannot be bettered by any of the other runners. He would also add any points he may take from riding the Knut, as he wouldn’t't have to discard any.

Gary was our Centre Champion once before decades ago, back in 1990

ACU Licence Renewals for 2012

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Hi all,

Some of us [all of us?] have had our Competition Licence/Trials Registration Renewal Forms by now.

You’ll see, well I did when I went to look, that you are going to need a  ‘Unique Club Membership Code issued by Club:  ‘

You’ll need to get this from your Club Secretary, or Club Membership Secretary, however Rugby hasn’t issued them to Clubs yet, as Gary Scrivs. has found [he's Bristol Phoenix's Club Secretary if you didn't know]

Don’t panic, Rugby tell me this morning, Monday 14th Nov, that some were sent last week, & the rest are are being sent  this week. I don’t know if this is as hard or soft copy.

I suggest you don’t try to talk to your Club official until around Wednesday next week 23/11/11 when all should be well!

Bear in mind that you will need this unique number whether you are renewing online or via hard copy, & that your Club might want your Club Sub before giving you the number!

I hope this helps clarify the current situation for everyone!

Hope to see lots of  you at Frome’s Championship Trial on Sunday – Frank

NSMSC’s Presidents Championship Trial Regs & their Gordon Brown Chase TT Results posted. Observing Trials – it’s not worth the bother thanks

Monday, November 7th, 2011
Hi all, sorry I seem to have been neglecting the website a bit. Too many other demands etc etc. We’ve posted the Regs & Entry Form for the Centre Championship NSMSC Presidents Trophy Trial, on the 27th November for you. The [corrected] Results for the 2 hour Gordon Brown Chase NSMSC Timed Trial are also up there.

The last View from Ba House obviously touched a nerve with some of you at least as it prompted this response from a current – but ageing – competitor. Another thoughtful contribution to the discussion

Hi Frank,

Always read with interest your ‘chattering’ and felt the need to respond/add to the latest “View from Ba House”.
Totally agree with your point of view, what a state we find ourselves in with ‘modern Trials’!
At nearly 50 years of age I have nothing but admiration for the skills of the current crop of Expert riders (if I was 30 years younger I’d be hopping everywhere… well I’d like to think so anyway….)
However observing within the current ACU rules (both of them!!!!) is an absolute nightmare. Unfortunately I believe that we are witnessing ‘modern Trials’ slowly but surely die on it’s feet.
Observers are getting increasingly fewer in numbers, and greater in age….
Not enough Youth coming through the sport (for what ever reason) meaning there are fewer and fewer observers. Not all, but even some parents are reluctant to pick up an observer board.
Who’s to blame. As always it’s never that clear cut, but our governing body certainly does not cover itself in glory.
I love riding a modern Trials bike, and ‘hacking around’ on a twinshock or ‘trick65′ just doesn’t appeal, however just look at how many riders they attract; and with that the observers.
Without observers our sport is meaningless.
We all have opions on what should or could be done, but ultimately we all need to wake up and set our own camp in order via our governing body.
I’m nearer the end of my Trials career (than the beginning) and will hopefully be able to ride until my body decides otherwise. It’s the younger riders I feel sorry for, as if things continue they will have fewer and fewer oportunities to ride ‘modern Trials’.
It’s always been the case that ‘the young’ fashion the future. Never more so has this been required than within our sport.
If you leave it to the majority of us ‘Oldies’ you’ll be riding twinshocks, as there will be little other choice……
Hope I’m wrong….. Rant over…. Back to trying to perfect that 90 degree mid air turns (Ooh bugger, backs gone again…….).

Mutter mutter, I’ve recently been politely bawled out for using my judgement in observing at my section. I was man enough to admit my error to the enquirer, & subsequently changed my decision [which affected 2 riders to whom I had given a benefit of doubt. I must remember to observe to the ‘book’ in future.  Strangely in another recent Trial I had a rider suggest on behalf of another that the chap riding the section be given a 3 rather than the 5 the Observer wrote down to ‘encourage’ him. That too would have been wrong according to the book wouldn’t it? Maybe Observers are becoming like Football Referee’s who seem to be criticised for not seeing the blindingly obvious.

I reckon the answer must be for riders to score Observers, then we can see who is the ‘best’ Observer, or maybe we would find the most popular Observer from the rider scorecards?

Yes it would be much easier if riders observed themselves as the Sage “so perhaps it’s time to let the experts do their own marking” who pens the View suggested & then they’d be able to give each other the hard time some Observers get!

Scott Trial …. new entrant?

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Just got back from a few days away to watch the Scott Trial. We had a look round on Friday & for the first time ever we saw no-one out checking out sections, not even at old favourite Surrender. No local interest at all this year  so we didn’t even go to the start field on Saturday, but because I’d still got stitches from my “ignition system” change & didn’t want to carry a rucksack around we decided to go the long way round & come down the “Barney” road to get there rather that through Reeth & up to Shaw Gutter. We saw Richard Fogg spectating there, doing a recce for an entry & hopefully a ride next year. Rider No 1 was still in front of the field there but John Sunter [No 145] had made up an awful lot of time when he arrived, I hesitate to say an unreasonable amount, but you do wonder how some people are that quick. Although the best hope from our end of the country was Ricky Wiggins at 181 in the programme, he had withdrawn & his place was taken by Anthony Tempest on a 300 Fantic, who also went through so early that we imagine he was started before his 10:00 official time. We saw Tony Rew from SW Centre here as well, & his son Peter [No 106] had broken a throttle cable even before the first section so he was down on time. Two Subs here, the lower easiest & the top Sub difficult with its steep steps & left hand exit. Eric Lejeune looked to be carrying the biggest backpack & was puffing a bit already! Andy Cripps surprisingly fell off & fived the bottom sub – but he was the best of the rest at the end of the day with first Finishers Certificate on 188m/l I don’t know the system as George Morton had lost 188 marks as well but had the last Spoon

Then we had lunch in Langthwaite where I saw Jarvis motoring along the road towards Reeth, presumably a retirement. & went on to Reels Head as there was off road parking [the same as for Underbanks] A couple of loose rocky climbs with the second looking easiest. John Sunter was first through, but Jonatan Richardson who started 20 minutes later was well up. Michael Brown didn’t seem to be in a hurry & I wondered if he was going for a really low observation total?

Then off to Goats where most of the field had gone by the time we got here, on this home run visit there was just one section of jumbled rock which was proving too much for the exhausted riders who couldn’t even pop the front wheel over the first step. Most of these guys were not even attempting to ride through the exit cards to save time. Harriet Peacock, [No 2] who we were told was put out at her start position [I don't know why - it obviously gives you the best chance of finishing the course] was being minded by a back marker who told her to put the front wheel in & then pulled her back out, was obviously going to be out of time [& was]. I see from the Results that she was given the Best Endeavour Trophy. I don’t know if she was pleased about that or not? Peter Rew came through so he was going to finish but whether he would be in time I wasn’t sure

Fairly local riders, George Edyvean & George Pollard both collected Finishers Certificates, Chris Shorey either retired or was out of time, & Jake Evans-Luter [160m/l] had a good ride for a Spoon & the Herbert Scott Cup for best first timer. Peter Rew will be disappointed as he was 10 minutes off a Finishers Certificate.

Ah yes who was the winner, Jonathan Richardson [2+39 = 41] – I tipped Jonathan for the Pinhard Prize at the last Board Meeting – unless a young road racer is nominated, 2nd James Dabill [9+38 =47] 3rd Ian Austermuhle [12+35 =47] Ah so fastest time takes precedence in tie breaks, that ‘s why Andy Cripps missed a spoon then, Michael Brown [19+36 = 55], Dan Thorpe [36=49 = 85], Wayne braybrooke [36+50 =86], & James Fry [30+57 =87]

So as you can see its close at the sharp end & where was Dougie Lampkin? Didn’t start, that ankle he hurt at the SSDT when showboating kept him out.

So there’s a taste of this years Scott, and to finish on another sad note, today has the funeral of road racer Marco Simoncelli who was taken during the MotoGP at Sepang in Malaysia the day after the Scott

Bath Clubs Peace Trial Cancelled, New ignition system fitted, Latest Trials Championship Tables etc. Board decision re Trials Championship Rounds

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

Bath Club News -

I’m sorry to have to report that our Peace-Trophy Trial, due to be held on Saturday 5th November, has been cancelled. Unfortunately our usual venue,Rodney Farm,is not available to us at the moment,so we had no alternative but to cancel this year’s event.

We do however hope to run the Knut Trial this year and look forward to seeing you all again on Sunday December 11th.We’re planning to go to our usual venue at Dyrham Woods.More details nearer to the event.     Nipper Allen.

Franks’ News – had a new ignition system fitted last Friday. Thanks to NHS & RUH!

Centre Champion News - Merv Walker is ‘walking away’ with the  ’C’ Novice class with 6 wins from 6 rounds. It’s extremely unlikely he will be beaten! It also looks most likely that Gary Marshman can take the Expert Class as, if he rides the next three rounds all those scores will count, whereas Ben Lovelace will drop a score if he rides the next three. It looks as if Colins’ Championship run will finish this year, unless some extremely unlikely events happen.

In AB Kevin Hart only need one third place ride to clinch it, although Trevor Ashford Dean Lovelace & Rob Scott are going to sort out the 2nd to 4th places between them I reckon. B class looks as if it’ll be Kevin Miller from Andy Kibby. I won’t embarrass our O/40 & O/50 riders, no I’ve changed my mind, I will! O/40: Mark Talbot leads Colin Bennett & I reckon he’s the favourite & in O/50 it’ll be Martin Strang.

Board Decision re this years Trials Champs:

“Following the October Board Meeting it was agreed that as some of the Wessex Centre Championship Trials have had to be cancelled for 2011 the Championship will be decided by  taking into account the best scores from all but two of the rounds held. Therefore if 10 rounds are held 8 scores will count but if a rider only rides in 6 of the rounds then all six of his scores will count.”

WRT West Wilts Results, they seem to be back on the web!

You can check them here [by clicking], on our Non Championship Trial, Timed Trial, Hare & Hounds & Enduro Results for 2011 Page or on the Clubs website  WWMC H&H Results 02/10/11

Thinking aloud now, I know that we have normally posted Regs & Results on a Page that you have to visit to find the info you want that takes two clicks, whereas, as we’ve done above you can get to the info in just one click. I suppose one click is quicker, but having a Page for a years worth of Regs or Results makes most sense for our aim of providing an Archive of Information about the Centre. So at the end of 2011, we will begin a new Page for ie Non Championship Trial, Timed Trial, Hare & Hounds & Enduro Results for 2012 We are aware some of you out there have found it difficult to navigate to what you want to find, but we think that is because you are used to navigating other sites. For instance how many Banking on line sites work in exactly the same way? We find we get used to ‘knowing’ how to find the interest rate on Bank ‘y’s Accounts & then get frustrated because Bank ‘z’s site doesn’t do it the same way.  Let me know if you agree/disagree or have any ideas for improvements, as the turn of the year s a good time to make changes.

Here’s a question for you, I looked at the Enduro News website last night to see if there was anything up about the West Wilts Event on Sunday. Yes there was, but I then found it was aGallery of about 2500 pictures from the Event, now I don’t know about you but is anyone seriously going to look at all those pictures in case they want to buy one without the MLA Photography plastered across it? Or am I still just  a ‘bof’ who doesn’t understand the point of it all?

Well I’ve been busy busy!

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Those things I said I had to tell you about! There have been working parties at Farleigh on Wednesday Friday & Saturday & the Event yesterday. Afterwards we had been invited round to Clive for Dinner which was very welcome, then I checked the Results for our [WWMC] event were up – they were when I looked around 10:00pm & I also found there were several notes I need to draw your attention that came in on Sunday evening. Now I’ve got my own essential admin up to date I can make a start.

FROME CLUB DINNER Put this one in your Diary , Mary says

“Hi Frank

Just to let you know our dinner dance will be on Saturday December 03rd at the usual venue at Frome Market, tickets are £18 (a real bargain). Could you put an entry in the gazette for me please. Any one interested please contact me on 01761 435035.

Many thanks”

Only £18:00? That is a bargain, isn’t it the Club is certainly paying you back for your support of their Events at that price, I should ring Mary now.

Now to videos: Fraser Dickin has some footage of the Hawkesbury & says:

I was testing out a helmet-mounted video camera (which is very similar, if not identical, to the one Chris Wrigley has) at today’s trial. I edited and uploaded some footage of me doing the yellow route sections which I’ve put here:

About this video:
“Cette première édition a été un vrai réussite sur tous les aspects : Organisation, interzone, tracé des zones, repas !!!”

Frank says: As one of the “bof “brigade I rather liked the background music, can anyone tell me who/what it is?

& in just a moment I’ll have posted the NSMSC Ivan Manning Trophy TT results from 25th September

Further stuff follows in a separate post: Frank

Nice afternoon at Knapps! Mendips Brockley Cup Regs, its past my bedtime!

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

While I was loading the car I could hear the Public Address at Farleigh Castle & the first of todays practice sessions for the International Vets MX of Nations & then it was slow going up the A46 to get to Kingswoods Centre Trials Championship Round at Knapps on Inglestone Common. There were loads of horseboxes heading towards Badminton for something!

First time we’ve ever been to this venue! Seemed like a good entry in all Classes but with all those people it was still a struggle for the Club to find 10 observers! Please volunteer rather than “disappear” when the signing on Board is circulating. On & off drizzle after the start made things slippy as the Trial went on. I’d guess it will be a low scoring Trial in the Experts class though & concentration might prove to be what sorts them out as it could be difficult to regain the marks lost with any ‘slack dabs’. First time we’ve seen Mark Kemps lad ride, although I gather he pretty keen on Rugby as well. Years ago I would have thought Rugby was much less dangerous that Trials Riding but these days certainly at top level Rugby is more so I think. Some guys weigh twice as much as I do & more & what do they do? They run through equally big guys & something has to give!

Now I’ll sit back & wait to see some Results.

You’ll also find  I’ve posted the Regs for Mendips Brockley Cup Club Trial on 23rd October thanks to Andy Leahy

Not sure that anyone from the Centre has entered the Scott Trial this year but good luck to Ricky Wiggins & George Edyvean.

Look forward to some of you next Sunday at West Wilts H&H  Enduro at Farleigh, & the next Championship Trial at Easterton Sands in a fortnights time Get those entries in to Phyllis asap

As above, its past my bedtime, but I’ve just seen todays Results which I’ll post uo tomorrow for you. My prophecy about low scoring & slack dabs  in the Experts was correct : Gary Marshman was a clear winne on 3m/l but Ben Lovelace, Ben Bowkett, Lee Hassall, Fred Adams & Kurt Brain lost 9,10,11,12,& 13 respectively. Really really close eh!

Wessex success in ICTT, Hawkesbury Cup Trial Regs, RT Keedwell TT results, Centre Dates Meeting…. etc….

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Give me a minute & I’ll have something up about all these things!

Just got back from the ICTT & the teams have all had a good weekend, & rode their hearts out. Over the last few years we (& others) have criticised the severity of this event, but Mid Wales Centre got this one just right, it wasn’t too hard. I had congratulated the CofC after the Youth event & before John Collins made the same comment in Public! Yes, we lost quite a lot of marks but  it was all pretty well do-able for all riders not just for the National Championship top runners.

Our  Youth team pushed MCUI (SC) teams into last position, & were only 5 points behind our rivals up the road from Western Centre. Tom Culliford was our best points scorer, as I expected, & was ninth overall in C class. Victoria Payne made history by being the first young woman to be selected on merit for a Youth team & although she was our non scoring runner she rode consistently averaging less than 3 marks lost/section. They all had T shirts with the event printed on them, & Pete Culliford had made up some professional stickers announcing who we were to be stuck on bikes/helmets/vans [you choose]. So our team all looked the part. Josh Golding was the only veteran in the team having represented us previously, & was our most improved rider on his second 5 mile lap of 20 sections, equalling Olli Humphris score of 24 m/l in the lap. Gareth Talbot had a tough day but stuck at it & improved on his second lap.

This year riders were allowed just 60seconds to ride a section, & although this means each Centre had to provide an observer & a timekeeper it worked well & few people were timed out (when you then automatically are docked a five). Thanks to Theresa Talbot & Nicola Golding who did this for us. Mark Talbot was kept busy as our team helper allowed to ride in support

The Centre can be proud of them & we thank them & their families for their efforts on our behalf. BTW Yorkshire were the clear winner from East Yorkshire, but our friends from South Western Centre had a good day to finish 4th. Sorry to say Western Centre were one place in front of us, & Alex Muirhead was their non scorer as he cracked an engine casing after 5 or so sections on his first lap. Steve Saunders son James  was their best C class rider but he lost 48 marks, 9 more than Tom.

The Solo event saw us again unable to quite match the efforts of Western Centre, who finished one place above us again, but we pushed Eastern  & West South Wales Centre into the penultimate & ultimate places. I won’t surprise you when I tell you that Colin Crease was our best rider, with an excellent 2nd lap score of 10m/l. On the first lap Kurt Brain was our best runner, & he was our most consistent rider with his laps of 29 & 28. I only saw our team on section 19 where Mary was observing & Phyllis timekeeping, this had a rock face up to be ridden up & down twice with the approach across a dusty track. Lee had a spectacular failure on the second step first lap with cartwheels! Judging from his 1st lap total he was having a bad & frustrating lap most everywhere, but his second visit to 19 was nicely controlled & ridden, in the end Lee’s score was our discard. Fred Adams looked out of control [was it Fred?]  on the first step on the first lap & struggled a bit on the second step but had a very nicely controlled ride second time around. Fred was pretty well as high as James Dabill was on the second step on both  laps. Awesome Fred! Craig had a steady ride by the look of things. Gareth did the seconds left shouting for us.

It was really good to see the support the Centre gave the guys, the youth team were out in force to watch, only the Goldings, & Olli’s Gran & Grandad couldn’t stay for  the Saturday. Dean & Colin Hassall, Adam Colburn, Kurts Dad all came up to help not forgetting Team Manager Tom Crease with the dreadful time of 4 in the morning mentioned as a leaving time as signing on was from 08:00 to 09:00 hrs. Then we drew start position 19 which meant the team hanging around for their 12:24 start. Chris Adams looked to be adab hand at fixing them all up with bacon rolls & Coffee. It was worse for our observing team as they were at their section by 10:00 hrs & as the first lap takes  4hours of the 6hour limit they are out until around 18:20 in the evening. At least Mary & Phyllis  had a sheltered section, because about 3 of the Sections were completely exposed to the wind & would have been awful to observe had there been any rain like there was in the Saturday event.

To put things in perspective, there were, IIRC, 2 clean sheets, James Fry & Jonathon Richardson oh & Michael Brown & Alexz Wigg  so that’s 4 actually & Dabill dropped one. Thats how it should be, easy for the top men & hard but do=able & enjoyable for the Centre Runners. I spoke to several riders who said they [not from our Centre] that said they hadn’t looked forward to being selected for their Centre in previous years, but who were enjoying this one.

You’ll be pleased to know that Becky Cook was best Southern Centre rider with a best [2nd] lap of 7!

I was interested to listen to a ‘dispute’ between a team manager & a timekeeper in Section 1. The manager asserted that his man was out within 60 seconds & there was chat that you couldn’t time to two seconds in 60 anyway. He was wrong. the timekeeper was perfectly positioned in line with the starts card, & then the ends card, you heard the bleep when the stopwatch got to 60 seconds & the reason the ride took more than a minute was that the rider hadn’t fancied a sharp rocky climb & stopped, he was looking at it, being encouraged & advised by his team leader for too long When he did decide to go there wasn’t long enough left. Simple as that. I wuz thur! The experienced timekeeper kept cool & didn’t allow a slanging match to develop. Interesting that that Centres Observers were talking about the incident at Dinner afterwards – so you see how important these ‘little’ things are to possible winning teams.

The Chair boys did alright although I only saw them on section 10 on lap 2 of their 4 laps. I overheard the observer, who would have seen the punch card totals for laps 1 & 2 suggesting to the Asst CofC that the sections needed to be altered to take marks [at this stage both Wessex & South Eastern had 4 & 3 clean sheets respectively, but wisdom prevailed & laps 3 & 4 sorted out a winning team. Unfortunately it was sorted in favour of South Eastern so we had to be content with 2nd place, so maybe we are disappointed? I don’t know, we just lost a three & a five so I know it was really close, but you can’t argue with three outfits who had four perfect Laps. Well done SE Centre

Right, I’ve put up the Hawkesbury (on Sunday week) Regs for you. They would have been up many weeks ago, but they weren’t sent to me !!! That’s the second lot of Trials Championship Regs that have been available but not sent to me recently – SO – Reminder to Club Comps Secretaries please forward to the Gazette Editor as soon as they are available. Smacked wrists for you.

Please note that Wilts Borders Championship Trial, the Autumn Trophy due on 6th November is cancelled due to a change in the Landowners farming plan

The Centre Dates Meeting will be on 1st November, Clubs are asked to submit their dates, to the Centre Secretary, by October 10th. So Clubs will need to have decided what when & where at their next Club Meeting if not before!

Ivan Manning Trophy: The next Centre Championship Timed Trial is North Somerset’s event on 25th September

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

The header says it all really! The Regs & Entry Form are now posted up for you.

Tony Colman tells me its at a new venue but still in Chelwood. Enjoy!

Did I say our Plums were £1 a kilo? Well we now have about 45 quid for the Dorothy House Hospice, the only downside is I’ve been promoted from ‘drier up’ to ‘washer up & drier up’. Phyllis was stung by what we guess was a wasp &  as a result has a >1cm squared patch of no skin on her index finger. Now I know what the phrase ‘Mans’ work is never done’ means!

See you soon: Frank
