Ken’s funeral: As promised, here are the details of Ken Hoults funeral. It will be at Kingsdown Crematorium today week, Wednesday 9th November at 11:15am. Family flowers only please, but donations will be to a cancer charity. The cortege will have some Swindon Club member outriders.

The View From Ba-House
I went to the Mitchell Trial recently over in South Wales. The Mitchell has to be one of my favourite trials,I’ve been watching it for ages.In the early days it started in the town of Neath, the start being in an  engineering works, which has sadly gone now. I remember that the riders were treated to a proper  Breakfast, eggs, bacon and fried bread, and the Mayor of Neath turned up to flag everyone away. Like all the Nationals in those days it was a day-long ride for the competitors, and they would have had a lovely time, visiting hidden valleys and riding over miles of trackless mountain  moorland.

Sadly that’s all gone now and like every other ” Modern” National the Mitchell is held in just one place. This year the course was near Newbridge in South Wales, at a farm with an unpronounceable name beginning with M, and you reached it by way of a five-mile drive up a single-track lane. The place was super, set in a steeply wooded combe with a little rocky stream running through it.There was everything you would need to lay out a perfect short National course.

But watching a British-Championship trial these days is like going to the Pantomime. Sadly it’s not a serious contest anymore, it’s now all about free-style riding. You can still enjoy the skills of the riders for a while though, but eventually it gets boring, all that jumping up and down stuff, so I left early and went home the pretty way.

Unfortunately when you get back to your own Centre, if you agree to observe, then you have to be prepared to put up with all this nonsense in your own back yard. As is usual the great majority of the riders these days are trouble free, it’s just in the A class route where all the grief is to be found. When I’m observing my heart sinks when the experts appear, because I know that they will be looking for every way, short of threatening me with a gun, to gain an advantage. I’ve stood there watching the usual stuff, footing with feet on rests, using the knee and elbow to convince the observer that you are still riding the motorcycle, etc, but in the last two trials they’ve tried something new, well new to me anyway.

What they all did was ride up past where they wanted to be, stop and turn through 90 degrees, then hop sideways back down the hill at the time I thought it was my birthday, for they’d all gone backwards, job done, fives all round.

But really I suppose it depends on what “going backwards” amounts to in the modern game. I’m pretty sure that the experts would argue that they can’t be going backwards if they’re hopping sideways, but some would say that returning down a hill to the place you’ve just left is going backwards. Still it doesn’t matter that much, the only problem is that observers like me aren’t really able to keep up with all these cunning plans, so perhaps it’s time to let the experts do their own marking. We can trust them to do that  surely ?

Watching trials over the years you get to collect quite a lot of pleasant memories. A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to catch Ian Fortune’s latest triple-salko accident. (How he does it without hurting himself is a mystery to me.), but the most unusual incident I’ve seen happened out of Centre at a charity trial in Somerset. As it was a fun trial the organisers did without observers and let the riders mark themselves.

Possible T&E Seminar

Plans are afoot to hold a Regional T&E Licencing Seminar in Swindon on 8th December. The date /venue has to be confirmed  but is most likely at Swindons clubhouse. The session will be open to all & its in Swindon because they asked! & have several members who need to renew. Watch this space.

We have some Results & Regs to post as soon as we have time.

That’s it for the moment: Frank

Bath Clubs Peace Trial Cancelled, New ignition system fitted, Latest Trials Championship Tables etc. Board decision re Trials Championship Rounds

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

Bath Club News -

I’m sorry to have to report that our Peace-Trophy Trial, due to be held on Saturday 5th November, has been cancelled. Unfortunately our usual venue,Rodney Farm,is not available to us at the moment,so we had no alternative but to cancel this year’s event.

We do however hope to run the Knut Trial this year and look forward to seeing you all again on Sunday December 11th.We’re planning to go to our usual venue at Dyrham Woods.More details nearer to the event.     Nipper Allen.

Franks’ News – had a new ignition system fitted last Friday. Thanks to NHS & RUH!

Centre Champion News - Merv Walker is ‘walking away’ with the  ’C’ Novice class with 6 wins from 6 rounds. It’s extremely unlikely he will be beaten! It also looks most likely that Gary Marshman can take the Expert Class as, if he rides the next three rounds all those scores will count, whereas Ben Lovelace will drop a score if he rides the next three. It looks as if Colins’ Championship run will finish this year, unless some extremely unlikely events happen.

In AB Kevin Hart only need one third place ride to clinch it, although Trevor Ashford Dean Lovelace & Rob Scott are going to sort out the 2nd to 4th places between them I reckon. B class looks as if it’ll be Kevin Miller from Andy Kibby. I won’t embarrass our O/40 & O/50 riders, no I’ve changed my mind, I will! O/40: Mark Talbot leads Colin Bennett & I reckon he’s the favourite & in O/50 it’ll be Martin Strang.

Board Decision re this years Trials Champs:

“Following the October Board Meeting it was agreed that as some of the Wessex Centre Championship Trials have had to be cancelled for 2011 the Championship will be decided by  taking into account the best scores from all but two of the rounds held. Therefore if 10 rounds are held 8 scores will count but if a rider only rides in 6 of the rounds then all six of his scores will count.”

Give me a minute & I’ll have something up about all these things!

Just got back from the ICTT & the teams have all had a good weekend, & rode their hearts out. Over the last few years we (& others) have criticised the severity of this event, but Mid Wales Centre got this one just right, it wasn’t too hard. I had congratulated the CofC after the Youth event & before John Collins made the same comment in Public! Yes, we lost quite a lot of marks but  it was all pretty well do-able for all riders not just for the National Championship top runners.

Our  Youth team pushed MCUI (SC) teams into last position, & were only 5 points behind our rivals up the road from Western Centre. Tom Culliford was our best points scorer, as I expected, & was ninth overall in C class. Victoria Payne made history by being the first young woman to be selected on merit for a Youth team & although she was our non scoring runner she rode consistently averaging less than 3 marks lost/section. They all had T shirts with the event printed on them, & Pete Culliford had made up some professional stickers announcing who we were to be stuck on bikes/helmets/vans [you choose]. So our team all looked the part. Josh Golding was the only veteran in the team having represented us previously, & was our most improved rider on his second 5 mile lap of 20 sections, equalling Olli Humphris score of 24 m/l in the lap. Gareth Talbot had a tough day but stuck at it & improved on his second lap.

This year riders were allowed just 60seconds to ride a section, & although this means each Centre had to provide an observer & a timekeeper it worked well & few people were timed out (when you then automatically are docked a five). Thanks to Theresa Talbot & Nicola Golding who did this for us. Mark Talbot was kept busy as our team helper allowed to ride in support

The Centre can be proud of them & we thank them & their families for their efforts on our behalf. BTW Yorkshire were the clear winner from East Yorkshire, but our friends from South Western Centre had a good day to finish 4th. Sorry to say Western Centre were one place in front of us, & Alex Muirhead was their non scorer as he cracked an engine casing after 5 or so sections on his first lap. Steve Saunders son James  was their best C class rider but he lost 48 marks, 9 more than Tom.

The Solo event saw us again unable to quite match the efforts of Western Centre, who finished one place above us again, but we pushed Eastern  & West South Wales Centre into the penultimate & ultimate places. I won’t surprise you when I tell you that Colin Crease was our best rider, with an excellent 2nd lap score of 10m/l. On the first lap Kurt Brain was our best runner, & he was our most consistent rider with his laps of 29 & 28. I only saw our team on section 19 where Mary was observing & Phyllis timekeeping, this had a rock face up to be ridden up & down twice with the approach across a dusty track. Lee had a spectacular failure on the second step first lap with cartwheels! Judging from his 1st lap total he was having a bad & frustrating lap most everywhere, but his second visit to 19 was nicely controlled & ridden, in the end Lee’s score was our discard. Fred Adams looked out of control [was it Fred?]  on the first step on the first lap & struggled a bit on the second step but had a very nicely controlled ride second time around. Fred was pretty well as high as James Dabill was on the second step on both  laps. Awesome Fred! Craig had a steady ride by the look of things. Gareth did the seconds left shouting for us.

It was really good to see the support the Centre gave the guys, the youth team were out in force to watch, only the Goldings, & Olli’s Gran & Grandad couldn’t stay for  the Saturday. Dean & Colin Hassall, Adam Colburn, Kurts Dad all came up to help not forgetting Team Manager Tom Crease with the dreadful time of 4 in the morning mentioned as a leaving time as signing on was from 08:00 to 09:00 hrs. Then we drew start position 19 which meant the team hanging around for their 12:24 start. Chris Adams looked to be adab hand at fixing them all up with bacon rolls & Coffee. It was worse for our observing team as they were at their section by 10:00 hrs & as the first lap takes  4hours of the 6hour limit they are out until around 18:20 in the evening. At least Mary & Phyllis  had a sheltered section, because about 3 of the Sections were completely exposed to the wind & would have been awful to observe had there been any rain like there was in the Saturday event.

To put things in perspective, there were, IIRC, 2 clean sheets, James Fry & Jonathon Richardson oh & Michael Brown & Alexz Wigg  so that’s 4 actually & Dabill dropped one. Thats how it should be, easy for the top men & hard but do=able & enjoyable for the Centre Runners. I spoke to several riders who said they [not from our Centre] that said they hadn’t looked forward to being selected for their Centre in previous years, but who were enjoying this one.

You’ll be pleased to know that Becky Cook was best Southern Centre rider with a best [2nd] lap of 7!

I was interested to listen to a ‘dispute’ between a team manager & a timekeeper in Section 1. The manager asserted that his man was out within 60 seconds & there was chat that you couldn’t time to two seconds in 60 anyway. He was wrong. the timekeeper was perfectly positioned in line with the starts card, & then the ends card, you heard the bleep when the stopwatch got to 60 seconds & the reason the ride took more than a minute was that the rider hadn’t fancied a sharp rocky climb & stopped, he was looking at it, being encouraged & advised by his team leader for too long When he did decide to go there wasn’t long enough left. Simple as that. I wuz thur! The experienced timekeeper kept cool & didn’t allow a slanging match to develop. Interesting that that Centres Observers were talking about the incident at Dinner afterwards – so you see how important these ‘little’ things are to possible winning teams.

The Chair boys did alright although I only saw them on section 10 on lap 2 of their 4 laps. I overheard the observer, who would have seen the punch card totals for laps 1 & 2 suggesting to the Asst CofC that the sections needed to be altered to take marks [at this stage both Wessex & South Eastern had 4 & 3 clean sheets respectively, but wisdom prevailed & laps 3 & 4 sorted out a winning team. Unfortunately it was sorted in favour of South Eastern so we had to be content with 2nd place, so maybe we are disappointed? I don’t know, we just lost a three & a five so I know it was really close, but you can’t argue with three outfits who had four perfect Laps. Well done SE Centre

Right, I’ve put up the Hawkesbury (on Sunday week) Regs for you. They would have been up many weeks ago, but they weren’t sent to me !!! That’s the second lot of Trials Championship Regs that have been available but not sent to me recently – SO – Reminder to Club Comps Secretaries please forward to the Gazette Editor as soon as they are available. Smacked wrists for you.

Please note that Wilts Borders Championship Trial, the Autumn Trophy due on 6th November is cancelled due to a change in the Landowners farming plan

The Centre Dates Meeting will be on 1st November, Clubs are asked to submit their dates, to the Centre Secretary, by October 10th. So Clubs will need to have decided what when & where at their next Club Meeting if not before!

Give me a minute & I’ll have you all updated! ACU General Secretary visits Centre Board Meeting.

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Normal Service will be resumed shortly. Just had a week looking after William during the day [his day starts at 06:00hrs & stops about 19:30hrs at his bedtime. It's been a long time since we were last changing babies! He's not quite crawling yet but is mobile - turn your back & he's gone!

In a jiffy I'll have posted up the Results of the Wells Clubs Lawford Timed Trial & Youth Trial from 25th June & the Regs & Entry Form for North Somersets Wednesday evening 20th July Timed Trial.

Last Tuesdays Board Meeting welcomed Gary Thompson who had asked to attend. Pleased to say it was a two way Meeting with questions asked of & answered by Gary. He has by the way been appointed CofC for the IoM TT next year so as he says 'no pressure there then' Talking of the TT, Ken Lywood thanked the Board for giving him two VIP day tickets for this years TT - he enjoyed it. So I think we can say that Kensmany years of Service to the Wessex Centre was suitably recognised.

We dispatched our routine business swiftly, and agreed to make a donation to BGRC tto help defray the costs of Trophies for the Schoolboy National Grass Track Finals they are hosting. Four Clubs had made comments about the 'on line' issue of Licences/Trials Registration. Gary has summarised these & Directors will discuss & consult further.

Gary brought the bad news that we are on track to make a thumping great loss this year, due to the Permit income being much reduced from last year. Directors are addressing this issue urgently.

The things riders apparently get away with & that Organisers overlook or ignore continues to stagger me, Gary instanced one Rider who had been riding without a Trials Registration for 18 months! No Problem? No it wasn't until he had a fall during a Trial & apparently cracked/broke a couple of ribs. The guy died in hospital the day after the Event. So we [Gary] has to explain away to the Police why our well documented procedure of checking Licences had been circumvented by this rider. I wouldn’t wish to have been an Official at that Event, there may well be repercussions. You have been warned!

Sorry to hear that Aaron Poolman has broken a leg, & that he will miss his ACU Team ride in the upcoming ISDE.

Pleased to hear Becky Cook has regained her Ladies Trials Championship with a Round to go

News from Corse – from Chris W & Janet H. MotoGiro d’Italia. ACU consultation on introduction of an online Competition Licence/Trials Registration system.

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Hi Frank, a quick report from the mountains of Corsica.

What a beautiful Island. Arrived monday 7 am,  riding in mountains by 9 am.  Used up 12 litres of fuel exclusively on tracks and trails up to 2400 m [ca 7500' Ed.] high First hotel fantastic with pool ,jaccuzzi, etc, food excellent. My bike died today, we think it is electrical so a replacement stator ,coil and cd [? Ed.]are on 24 hr delivery from Dherby moto. I have to say this shop puts any and all uk trials shops to shame with the service and choice, [eat your heart out BVM? - Ed.] It’s the biggest trials outlet in europe. tomorrow I have to sit it out by the pool or in the jacussi ,sauna, or bar this hotel is also very good.

We are being guided by a paris dakar & enduro rider called Michael Pissano and spannnered by his mechanic.. bivouac lunch stops refuelling ad hoc..thoroughly reccomend this deal as it is about same offroad mileage as the Scottish with the sections built into the tracks. Exceptional panorama’s weather 28 at 2400 mtrs, sunny with a violent thunderstorm for 30 mins today. We also did a 3 day trial in Ardeche very very good videos etc on http://www.trialclub.com. Janet on podium as usual.Sorry about spelling etc I just cant see this screen too well. Better get to sleep now 0815 start tomorrow so will breakfast with the guys. all good company I was in tears of laughter at dinner tonight. Best regards to all trials mates at home will keep posting. Chris

At the last Board Meeting all Clubs were reminded that ACU Rugby has issued a consultation document about online Competition LicenceaTrials Registration. Directors say its [an online Licence application Form which will take your Fee by debit or credit card]going to happen for next year & will be in place by 01/11/11. The current paper system will continue in parellel. The Centre urges all Clubs to consider the consultation document & respond directly to Gary Thompson. FYI the document was sent [I don't know if paper copies were sent or not] to all Club Secretaries, Gary wants response by 30/06/11 thats just a fortnight away now.

West Wilts are responding as the system that will be introduced does not in the Clubs opinion meet the need of Clubs – it might suit Rugby, but not us as a Club. We suspect your Club will find the same. If you need a copy of the document ask Keith Wooster, Theresa Talbot or myself.

‘New’ Centre Treasurer Clive Chapman had just got back from the MotoGiro d’Italia a six day Rally in surprise surprise Italy on his 175cc MotoGuzzi Lodola together with a lot of other Brits. Have a look at www.motogiroitalia.it for  the route & results.

The Regs I posted for BSSA’s Reg Lewis are last years. Not entirely my fault, it’s Jans’ computers! But as James says he would be inclined to remove the Regs as some people may become really confused. I’ve told you the correct date, but the Regs you download say April 11th [2010]. I’ll let you all know when we’ve got correct ones!

More good news culled from the SW Centre Gazette, Heidi has written that Joe Baker is now a Dad! Ali has had a little girl Chloe AND Joe & Ali are getting married Joe having proposed on Valentines Day. Don’t have to ask Joe for a sitrep during the SSDT now! Sw’s Gazette also reports that Mike & Evelyn Hann’s daughter Vicky has made them Grandparents too.

The Sporting MotorCyclist has a valedictory notice about the ACE Trials Team which has disbanded. Bob Adams tells you about the triasl, tribulations & costs of  sponsoring riders.

Expect a visit from Gary Thompson [ACU General Secretary] to the June Board Meeting. All are welcome to quiz or rant at him, but it would help if you tabled a question to the Board beforehand, either to me or Theresa Talbot

See you at the West Wilts Dinner I hope: Frank

We’ve held the AGM for 2011 & Maisie Payne was presented with a Rose Bowl.

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Right then, there’s a list of people you are lumbered with until next time [!] on a Page called ‘Centre Officials’ under the About parent page.

We’re delighted that Chris Fear was elected as your President – in case you didn’t know –  she does a lot of work behind the scenes to help the Centre to run smoothly, as well as the work she does for the Kingswood Club.

The outgoing President has the award of the Harry Croft Trophy in his gift, & he chose to award it to Ken Lywood, the man who has held the Centrte Finances under control for more years than he cares to remember. In recent years the trophy has seemed to have been awarded to the person who has made most contribution to motor cycling in the Centre in the previous year, but Ken tells me that originally it was intended to be an award to the young person who made the biggest contribution!

We welcome our new Treasurer, Clive Chapman, a member of the Swindon Club & wish him well in his task.

Mention of young people leads me on to tell you that  Phil Steadman on behalf of the Centre made a special award of a Rose Bowl to Maisie Payne to mark her winning the 2010 Girls National ‘C’ class Trials Championship. It’s good to see a Wessex rider reminding the country that we have some pretty darn good riders living in our Centre. There was a big bunch of flowers to put in it as well!

It’s Kurt Brain! Sometimes you have to wait for things. A couple of suggestions. Centre AGM tomorrow!

Monday, January 31st, 2011

My request for info was promptly answered by Phil Marsh, Thanks Phil!

Kurt, I find, has form on two wheels – he’s been a topclass mountainbike downhiller in the UK & abroad & been a motocrosser. He comes from Dursley, & is an ace at bike trials. I see that last year he rode as a Clubman Expert in the Western Centre Trials Champs. Hope to see him again at more Wessex Centre Trials together with Ben & Nicky Toms?

Lets run a couple of things past you all: someone suggested we had a for sale Page. That wouldn’t be a problem but I don’t know how often it would be used? We’re quite happy to put an ad. for your present pride & joy, or your last years graphics(!) up in one of these posts – it could be tagged to a ‘for sale’ category so you could search.

Another suggestion has been that we list Observers names with Trial Results. Again we would be quite happy to do that if we are provided with the information. The rationale for this suggestion is that Riders recognize & know some of our Observers but not all of them. I know that most of you thank each Sections Observer on your last lap, but would like to thank them all by name. Listing their names might help that aim.

Let me know what you think?

Sunday at the Avery was the first time I’d seen Rob & son Lewis Scott riding together. It’s been a long wait for Rob to see Lewis want to ride competitively. We remember Lewis having one or two rides as a ‘D’ class youth, but he didn’t take to it then. Now he’s seen the light? We hope he has fun & maybe he’ll work out what he’s missed this last 10 years or so. good to see them both. Who next, Lewis Cameron perhaps?

Centre AGM tomorrow remember: all are welcome – if you haven’t primed your Board Delegates with what you think is wrong, or even right, with the ways things are run come along & have your say. You mightn’t take the Board with you but you’ll have got it off your chest!

Keep your feet up: Frank
